(10/2/97) BATES _ Mrs. Stella L. Bates of Calgary, passed away at the Father Lacombe Nursing Home on September 29, 1997 at the age of 85 years. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Truman Eaton Bates in 1994. She will be lovingly remembered by her two daughters and a son-in-law, Joyce and Marshall Stoddart of North Vancouver, B.C., and Betty Leech of Calgary; and a son and daughter-in-law, Don and Gail Bates of Calgary; as well as by five grandchildren, Tracy (Bruce), Cindy (Randy), Brad (Lesli), Kelly (Michael), Brett (Jennifer); and twelve great-grandchildren. Wayne worked at Petro Fina and Petro Canada for over twenty-seven years. Wayne enjoyed bowling, traveling, photography, golf, watching sports and took great pleasure in his grandchildren. Wayne was a member of the Cochrane Lions Club and has resided in the Cochrane area for thirty-six years. Wayne was predeceased by his father Sam Blood, and is survived by his wife Melva; daughters, Heather (Nick), Brenda (Gord); son Ross; and grandchildren, Chelsea and Gavin. (10/2/97) BRUNSDEN _ Alice Kathleen (Mollie) Brunsden (nee Adams) passed away at the Bow View Manor on September 30, 1997. Mrs. Brunsden was predeceased by her husband E.W. (Ted) Brunsden, former M.P. in 1976. She is survived by her daughter Marjorie (Al) Bahan, grandchildren, Mark (Sabina) and Lisa, great-grandchildren, Cameron, and Mikaela of Calgary; her daughter Suzanne (George) Wilkinson, grandchildren, Kathy and Bob (Rena), great-grandchildren, Dustin, Brittany and Crystal of Brooks, Alberta; as well as her son E.D. (Ed) Brunsden of Vancouver B.C. Born in Neepawa, Manitoba on July 7, 1900, Mollie came to Calgary with her parents in 1920. She was well-known in musical circles both as a choir member and soloist of the Bow Valley Chapter O.E.S. (10/2/97) CORLEY _ Victor Angus Corley, beloved husband of Joan, of Calgary passed away at the Rockyview Hospital on September 30, 1997 after a long courageous struggle with cancer, at the age of 66 years. Born and raised in Lindsay, Ontario, Vic was devoted to hockey and played for the Lindsay Muskies. He was employed in sales with Abex Industries in Lindsay and transferred to Regina, Saskatchewan in 1958 and then to Calgary in 1961. In 1966, he joined the Bendix Corp. (Allied Signal) until his retirement, having spent all of his working life in the automotive industry. In his later years, he developed a passion for carpentry, building bird houses, feeders, and patio planters for his many relatives and friends. Besides his loving wife, Vic is survived by his children and grandchildren, Vicki Williams and her husband Dale of Edmonton, Jane Corley and her son Andrew of Calgary, Richard and Karen Corley and their children, Vanessa and Devin, of Airdrie. He is also survived by his sisters and brothers, Helen, Jean, Wim, Nan, Bob, Jim, and Erna, and their families, all of Lindsay, Ontario. (10/2/97) HOLLAND _ Stuart Anthony Holland, beloved son of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon and Joan Holland of Calgary, died suddenly on September 30, 1997 at the age of 32 years. Stuart was born February 1, 1965 in Regina, Saskatchewan. He was educated in Calgary and at the Grenville Christian College in Brockville, Ontario. Stuart graduated from SAIT receiving his hotel management and accounting diplomas and was working towards his C.G.A. He enjoyed hockey, biking, hiking, and playing rugby with the Saracens Rugby Club, as well, he was a member of Toastmasters. Stuart was a true animal lover. He enjoyed travelling and made adventures of his travels. He is survived by his loving parents, Gordon and Joan, and his brother David, all of Calgary. He is also survived by several uncles, aunts, and cousins; and is lovingly remembered by his uncle John and aunty Joyce Kelly of Calgary. (10/2/97) LEPPARD _ Minnie H., peacefully September 9, 1997 in Qualicum Beach, B.C., at age 94. Born in Manitoba to Norman and Elizabeth Holmes, she came to Claresholm in 1907. She and husband Eugene taught at Morley and Springbank and in BC until 1974. After Eugene died in 1976, she lived on her own until late 1994 and died in Eagle Park Care Facility. She was predeceased by her sisters, husband, daughter-in-law Cathy, son Brian and grandson Bruce. She is survived by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Les and Jerry Morgan, Brian and Jodie Leppard, Tasha and Tyler, and Bonita Leppard, all of Texas; nieces and nephews, Donna Fraser, Rae Geddes and three in USA; cousin Jean Denoon and families. Fondly remembered by other relatives, many former students and friends from throughout her life, for she truly made an impact on the lives of those who knew her. (10/2/97) MACKENZIE _ Ruth Mackenzie of Calgary, passed away at the Foothills Hospital on September 30, 1997, at the age of 99 years. She is survived by four children, two daughters, Margaret (Ross) Glass and Eileen (Ewan) Ferrier; two sons, Gordon (Ulla) Mackenzie and Bill (Rosalind) Mackenzie, all of Calgary; eight grandchildren and one great-grandson. Ruth was predeceased by her loving husband Thomas in May, 1997. She was born in Scotland on July 26, 1898 and was married to her husband Tom for sixty-nine years. Ruth and Tom enjoyed may years of hunting, fishing and outdoor activities in the West, with a special love for the mountains. Ruth was a loving wife, and mother, and will be sadly missed. She was an outgoing, caring person who touched everyone she met, "To know her was to love her". The family wish to thank Dr. G. (10/2/97) MEETSMA _ With grace, faith and dignity, Henry Meetsma, beloved husband of Grace, went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, October 1, 1997 at the age of 80 years. Formerly from Barrhead and Neerlandia, Alberta, he passed away peacefully with loved ones at his side at the Rosedale Hospice, Calgary, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born January 13, 1917, in Zandbulten, Friesland, and married Grace Runia on June 21, 1944. He enjoyed a successful forty-nine year career as a Mechanic. Henry and Grace immigrated to Canada in 1953 with three children and settled in Barrhead, Alberta, where two sons were added to the family. From 1965 to the present they resided in Calgary, except for a seven year period when he owned and operated Meetsma Motors in Neerlandia, Alberta. Active by faith and in deed, he helped build and served on council in the Christian Reformed Church. Henry will be sadly missed by his beloved wife of fifty-three years, Grace; their children and spouses, Gerald (Elizabeth) of Edmonton, Arnold (Emmy) of Calgary, Patricia (Jerry) VanderWal of Victoria, Henry (Margaret) of Morinville, and Richard of Calgary. He is also survived by his twelve grandchildren, Marilyn (Al), Michael (Brenda), Bryan (Emily), Jason, Sharlene (David), Arend, Matthew, Christopher, Stephen, Angela, DJ and Petra; and two great-grandchildren, David and Chantel. (10/2/97) NEWSOME _ Mary Newsome, cherished mother of Evelene Newsome of Calgary, Fred (Lucy) of Westcott, and Peter (Susan), and Ken (Linda) both of Cremona, passed away peacefully with her four children holding her, on September 27, 1997, at the age of 84. Over the years Mary won many hard fought battles against asthma but lost her last fight to cancer. Grandma will be missed by Janene (Brock) Martin, James (Andrea) Watson, Laurie (Ernie) Steen, Dale (Judi) Newsome, Kevin, Robert, Tim, Shawn, Steven, and Brandice Newsome, and "old Grandma" (Great) to Shaun, Sheldon, Joel, Dakota, and Levi. She is survived by her twin sister Elna Miller and brother Norman (Margaret) Jensen, both of Calgary; her stepson Norman Newsome of Drayton Valley; step-grandchildren, Darrell, Diana and David; nieces, Karen Denby and Judy Carruther; and nephew Victor Jensen. Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband Frank in 1974, brother Verner in 1977, mother Karen in 1940, and father Peter in 1961. She was born February 6, 1913 on the location of the Spyhill Jail and spent her youth in the Westminster district. After her marriage to Frank in January 1941, they resided in Bearspaw district where they raised their four children. They moved to Cremona in 1965 and then retired to Calgary in 1972. Mary was an active member of altruistic groups in all areas she resided. She and her twin Elna were lifetime members of the Thorncliffe-Greenview Community where they spent hundreds of hours as volunteers and enjoying Bingo and the wonderful companionship of the Thorncliffe Seniors. She also bowled until health problems prevented her participation. Mary will also be missed by her many friends and acquaintances and remembered for her joy of life, her kind, gentle and never complaining personality, her great sense of humour which she maintained to the end. (10/2/97) SONDERGAARD _ Reg. No. 14695 Sondergaard, Arne (Sandy) retired RCMP officer, passed away suddenly at his residence. He was born November 25, 1923, Holstbro (Hjerm) Denmark. Sandy is survived by his loving wife Myrtle and three sons, Arne Jr. of Bethel, Alaska, Bruce and Nicole of Ottawa, Mark and Carla of Calgary; and daughter-in-law Janet Sondergaard of Calgary. He was predeceased by his youngest son Donald in 1986, his parents, Lars Christian and Bodil, and brothers, Chris, Svend, Ernest and Andrew. Sandy is also survived by his special grandchildren, Kevin of Calgary, Lis and Kim of Ottawa, Jason of Calgary; sisters, Else of Denmark, Inger of Warner, Alberta; and numerous nieces and nephews. Sandy began his career with the RCMP Regina Training Depot, and Rockcliff, Ontario. After numerous postings in Saskatchewan and Alberta he retired after twenty-five years of service in 1970. Sandy also worked for Atco Structures and the Corp of Commissionaires in Calgary. After retirement he spent his new life enjoying his grandchildren, yard, travelling and socializing with his numerous friends. "Sandy" was a very special person who touched people in so many wonderful ways. He will be deeply missed but, we all know that he will be with us in our hearts always. Rest in peace Sandy!
